AI Regulation, Governance & Ethics

This is actually the field I work in, so this list differs substantially from the other contents in the vault insofar as the recommendations are much more targeted towards a professional audience and less accessible for the average user. However, recommendations one and three should be of overall interest for all readers, while the rest is my recommendation for all those who already work in AI governance or have the ambition to do so.

OECD Artificial Intelligence Policy Observatory

Run by the OECD itself, this is the essential starting point for understanding AI governance. Wide array of relevant content and tools, including the OECD AI Incidents Monitor (AIM), the OECD Catalogue of Tools & Metrics for Trustworthy AI, and much more.

IAPP: AI Governance

The International Association of Privacy Professionals provides a comprehensive website including the IAPP Global AI Law and Policy Tracker, information on the AIGP certification, a newsletter, a great glossary, and much more. Important: Some of this is members only.

White & Case: AI Watch: Global Regulatory Tracker

Understanding the (global) regulatory landscape of AI is essential for every professional role within AI management, governance, ethics, and so on. Here is a great ressource by a global law firm that highlights the overarching characteristics as well as country-specific information.

EU Artificial Intelligence Act (2024/1689)

While it is only applicable in the European Union, all AI governance professionals should be familiar with this legislation. It was the first of its kind and continues to be the most influential one. The Future of Life Institute also maintains a ressources page on the AI Act (here).

NIST: AI Risk Management Framework (2023)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is a U.S. government agency. The NIST AI RMF is a voluntary framework (and the best known and most widely applied of its kind) to develop and deploy AI safely. It comes with a companion NIST AI RMF Playbook.

ISO: ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management system (2023)

Lots of relevant AI standards have been published by ISO so far, but specifically for governance, the 42001 is the essential pick. This is an actual certifiable management system and connects closely to 27001, 9001, and 31000. Increasingly referenced, de facto the global baseline now.

IMDA: Model AI Governance Frameworks

Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority is a government agency that has been at the forefront of AI governance for years now. The frameworks for AI, generative AI, and agentic AI are basically essential knowledge for AI governance professionals at this point.

The Oxford Handbook of AI Governance (2024)

The numbers speak for themselves: 9 sections, 49 chapters, 1092 pages. Written by some of the finest researchers on the topic. The result spans all areas of AI governance. This is not a management guide for daily operations. It is academic in nature. And utterly fascinating at that.

The Oxford Handbook of Ethics of AI (2020)

As you have seen in this list, my focus lies much more on regulation and governance than ethics, while acknowledging that AI ethics is an incredibly important field of research. The Oxford Handbook does the same as the Governance Handbook: Provide a wide array of topics based on thorough research and concise writing.

Philipp’s pick: Gartner: AI Governance Platforms Reviews and Ratings

AI governance requires a digital platform that provides all features needed to develop and deploy AI within external and internal regulatory, complianca, and governance requirements. This list provides a great overview of products currently on the market.
